What's All The Hullabloo? pages 29-32

Finished color of the four pager. Here is the story behind this. Back in 1967 my mind was blown by Jim Steranko when he drew a four page spread in Strange Tales 167. To see the whole thing you had to buy two books and lay them side by side. I never did that. 24 cents was a lot of money for a kid back then. So as a joke I thought why not do a four page story but change it up and have it start on an even page so that to see the whole panorama you would have to get three books. (I have to amuse myself these days) Anyway long story short, I don't expect anyone to ever do that and thanks to the miracle of the internet I can share it for free. Hope you enjoy it.

Here's page 4 of The Fly. This story is respectfully dedicated to my favorite pitcher ever, Bob Gibson, the St. Louis Cardinals great. I only got to see him pitch on TV when I was a kid but later in life met him and had him sign a baseball. Still have it sitting on top of all my comics.

What's All The Hullabaloo?

Took a break from working on my short baseball story to do this rough. It's a sequal to Red Star Conspiracy and just to prove I have absolutely no business sense, it's a 60s inspired comedy called What's All The Hullabaloo?

Happy Birthday Jim Steranko

 

Haven't done one of these in awhile but I'd be remiss if I didn't say happy birthday to Jim Steranko. Born on this day in 1938 in Reading, Pennsylvania where he still lives, Steranko became a sensation (and probably my all-time favorite) in the 1960s drawing Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD for Marvel Comics. In a relatively short period building on past influences such as  Krigstein, Wood and Eisner and adding some film techniques he overturned many comic book conventions while creating a pop art classic. His entire bio would fill a whole book but you can read more here. Happy Birthday Steranko/:

Alex Toth

Today would have been Alex Toth's 83rd birthday. He was born on June 25th, 1928 in New York City and died May 22, 2006. His talent was evident very early and he began his professional career while still in his teens but never achieved a wide following in fandom despite being a favorite of many of his peers. As well as drawing comics he also worked in advertising and animation doing storyboards and designing characters such as Space Ghost. His strong drawing skills and clear and clever storytelling abilities gave him the reputation as an artist's artist but this may have rankled him somewhat as he developed a reputation for being cantankerous as he watched lesser but flashier illustrators get more recognition for their work. I myself passed over him when I was younger but as I matured, sought out his work wherever I could find it before finally getting to meet him and purchase the page you see above.
